Class hard at work on Bargue Drawing exercises. Jen says “Since my classical training I have always stood up to work, and your physiology works with you when you do. Some of our class started on the table easels, but we now all use standing easels.” It’s also much easier to check your work standing up. Lucien Freud said ” I stood up (to paint) and I haven’t sat down since”

Here’s the full rendering version of the Bargue Plate we are copying this rotation. The class learns how to make an accurate copy, using techniques specifically designed to train the eye and the hand. The end result is not so much a beautiful drawing (although we hope it is!) but certain transferable skills that can then be put to use in live drawing situations. Patience and persistence at this stage will bring great rewards!

The Bargue Drawing course starts this Saturday, 3rd March 2012, at 1:30 to 4:00.

Last weekend I had a really useful meeting with Fernando Freitas, who is the co-director of the Academy of Realist Art, with campuses in Toronto and Boston.

My training did not include Bargue drawing practice, but I have seen it’s benefits, especially for those whose drawing skills are in their early stages.

Fernando uses Bargue as a starting point for all his students and has kindly advised me on materials and methods which work well for his students. I have also acquired a DVD of him working on a Bargue Drawing which will be invaluable in showing how and where we need to progress to.
